The World of Wine (WOW) complex in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, is a major urban development project built on the site of historic port wine warehouses. The project, led by British-Portuguese firm Broadway Malyan and principal Margarida Caldeira, preserved the area’s architectural heritage while transforming it into a vibrant tourist attraction.
The project restored hundreds of 200-year-old warehouses, replacing wooden beams and restoring granite brickwork. Where structures were beyond repair, facades were preserved. Two contemporary buildings were added, blending with the historical setting. The complex also required extensive structural reinforcement, including 18 meters of excavation for modern technology installations.
Completed in 2020, just behind schedule due to COVID-19, the project has since won numerous awards and become a cultural hub for Porto, positioning the city as a destination for wine tourism and cultural experiences.
